OpenOil has been advising the United Nations on public policy aspects of the oil industry in Iraq since 2010, specifically the United Nations Development Program. There is a growing understanding among the international community dealing with Iraq that an understanding of the technical issues of the industry can help in dealing with a range of issues in Iraq’s reconstruction and future economic development, notably relations between the Baghdad government and the Kurdish regional authorities, neighbours like Iran and Kuwait, the role of parliament in oversight, issues of governance relating both to revenue flows and the environment across the country.
